The short answer
There is no washing schedule that suits every man. Hair type, scalp oil, activity and the products you use all influence what feels appropriate. A fixed rule based only on gender overlooks those differences.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends adjusting washing to how oily or dirty the hair becomes. Its guidance distinguishes hair that may need frequent cleansing from drier or more textured hair that may need less.
Observe the pattern you already have
Before changing the schedule, notice when the roots feel oily, when product builds up and how the lengths feel after washing. Your goal is to understand your own routine rather than follow an arbitrary number of days.
A brief record can help: wash day, products used and how the hair behaved afterward. You do not need a complicated tracking system; a few notes on your phone are enough to make the pattern clearer.
Include your styling products
A daily heavy pomade routine differs from wearing the hair with little or no product. Read the removal instructions and consider how the finish changes after repeated applications.
Adding more product each morning without considering the previous layer can make the haircut feel heavier. That is a useful observation to discuss before deciding that the cut itself needs aggressive thinning.
Distinguish a reset from a full wash
Sometimes the immediate problem is the direction of the hair after sleep or a hat. Other times it is actual buildup or an uncomfortable scalp. Those are different situations.
A styling reset may help a bent fringe, but it does not perform the same job as cleansing. Avoid using the ability to restyle as your only measure of whether the hair needs washing.
Adjust gradually
If the current routine is not working, change one factor at a time. That might mean the frequency, product amount or formula, rather than replacing everything simultaneously. Follow product instructions and pay attention to comfort.
If you have persistent itching, irritation or other scalp concerns, seek advice from a dermatologist. A general grooming article cannot determine the cause or prescribe a treatment schedule.

Tell your barber how you wear the hair between washes
The haircut should work through your ordinary routine, not only on the day it is professionally styled. Explain when it becomes flat, heavy or difficult to direct.
At City Barbers in Salt Lake City, bring your wash and styling habits into the consultation. That information helps shape a haircut and finishing routine you can realistically maintain.
