The short answer
Hair paste and wax can both help shape short or medium hair, but the names do not describe a fixed formula. Pastes are often used for flexible definition, while waxes commonly offer pliable control. Hold, shine and washout vary from product to product.
The most useful comparison is how each formula behaves in your hair. If you want a style you can move during the day, look for that specific quality instead of assuming every product in one category will provide it.
Decide what needs controlling
A fringe that falls forward is a different problem from a few separated sections you want to define. A side sweep may need consistent direction, while a crop may need only a small amount of texture.
At the chair
Describe the desired result to your barber. If the cut lacks the length or shape needed for that result, changing the styling product alone may not solve it. Start with the haircut, then choose the amount of control.
Compare the finish as well as the hold
Some formulas leave a natural-looking surface; others add visible shine. A product can feel firm while looking matte, or remain flexible while looking polished. Check the specific finish description.
If you are comparing two options, try to change one variable at a time. Using a large amount of one and a tiny amount of the other will not tell you much about which formula suits your hair.
Spread it before applying
A dense product can leave uneven patches if placed directly into the hair. Work the recommended small amount across your hands first, following the manufacturer’s directions. Then distribute it through the areas that need support.
Keep the first application away from becoming a heavy deposit at the front. Refine the fringe after the rest of the haircut has been arranged, using only the amount needed for the final detail.
Learn what restyling actually requires
Some products can be repositioned with the hands; others may need a little moisture or a fuller reset. Follow the product instructions and ask your barber what to expect. Repeatedly adding fresh layers can make the hair feel coated.
If your style is frequently disturbed by a hat or headphones, discuss that. You may need a more flexible finish or a haircut that returns to shape easily, rather than simply stronger hold.

Choose a routine you can maintain
Consider how you wash your hair and how much product residue you are comfortable with. Ease of removal and the feel at the end of the day matter as much as the first few minutes in the mirror.
