Should You Wash Your Hair Before a Haircut?

The short answer
Arrive with hair that can be assessed and worked through comfortably. If it is heavily coated in product, oily from several days of buildup or tangled, washing beforehand can make the appointment easier. If your booked service includes a wash, you may not need to wash it again immediately before leaving home.
The best preparation depends on the service and how you normally wear your hair. Follow any instructions from the shop, and ask if you are unsure about a particular treatment or styling routine.
Keep heavy product out of the way
A thick layer of wax, pomade or spray can hide how the hair naturally moves. It may also make it harder to see the shape you are trying to change. Arriving without heavy buildup gives your barber a clearer starting point.
You do not need to create a perfect finish before your appointment. If showing your everyday style helps explain the goal, keep the application light and tell your barber what you used.
Let your natural texture be visible
If you usually wear curls or waves, explain that before the haircut. Straightening the hair for the visit without mentioning your normal routine may make the consultation less representative of how you wear it.
A photo of your usual texture is useful if the hair has been flattened by a hat or changed by the trip to the shop. Show both a day when it sits well and the areas you want improved.
Check what your service includes
City Barbers’ Men’s Classic Haircut includes a hair wash among its listed services. Other haircut levels have their own descriptions, so review the current menu rather than assuming every appointment follows an identical sequence.
If you are unsure whether a wash is included in the service you selected, contact the shop. The purpose is to prepare appropriately, not to add unnecessary steps to your morning.
Avoid last-minute changes that complicate the consultation
A new heavy styling product or an unfamiliar home treatment can change how the hair feels just before you arrive. Unless the shop has asked you to do something specific, keep your preparation close to your normal routine.
Also leave enough time to arrive calmly. Rushing in with wet hair, a tight hat and no reference may make it harder to explain the shape you wanted. A short conversation about your goal is worth protecting.

Bring information as well as clean hair
Your barber needs to know what you like about the current cut and what becomes difficult as it grows. Save a few reference photos and be ready to describe the length you want to keep.
Book your next haircut at City Barbers in Salt Lake City and review the selected service before your visit. If preparation is unclear, call the shop so you can arrive ready for the appointment you actually booked.
