In brief

A two block haircut separates a longer upper section from shorter hair underneath. The top may fall over the shorter area, creating a contrast that is visible or partly concealed depending on the styling.

That structure is different from simply asking for short sides and a long top. The height of the separation and the way the upper hair falls are central to the result.

Choose where the longer section begins

The upper section can retain fullness around the temples or sit above a more exposed lower area. A separation placed too high for your preference can create a pronounced overhang or reveal more of the sides than intended.

At the chair

Show the side profile of your reference. Front photographs can hide the boundary between sections, especially when the fringe falls over the forehead.

Decide how you want to wear the fringe

A two block can be worn with curtains, a side direction or a forward fringe. Each requires enough length in the appropriate area. Tell your barber whether you want to switch between those options.

A strong natural part may affect which finish feels easiest. Do not assume the cut alone will make your hair separate symmetrically or bend like a reference styled on a different texture.

Keep weight under control without losing the shape

The upper section needs enough substance to create the style, but excessive weight can make it look like a shelf. The solution may involve adjusting the connection or distributing weight, rather than shortening the entire top.

Explain whether you want the top to look rounded, flatter or more separated. Those are shape decisions, and the word “thin” does not communicate them precisely.

Understand the grow-out

The lower sections may need attention before the longer top does. At a maintenance appointment, specify whether you want to preserve the upper length. This is especially useful if you are growing the fringe into a middle part.

If you later want a fully connected haircut, the shortest areas may need time to catch up. Ask what that transition would involve before choosing an especially close lower section.

Bring a realistic reference

Choose photographs with a similar density and natural texture where possible. If the reference relies on a perm or extensive styling, discuss the shape you can achieve with your current hair instead of assuming those effects are included.

Contact City Barbers in Salt Lake City with your reference and book a haircut consultation to settle the top, fringe and lower sections together.
